Old Bakery Beer Co.

The other night I was fortunate enough to be invited to an event at a new brewery in our area. Brandon and I had been wanting to visit, so this event was the perfect excuse for us to head out there!

The Old Bakery Beer Co. is located in downtown Alton, IL, so it was about a 45 minute drive from home.

We had actually tried one of their beers at the Lupulin Carnival, but we were excited to see their new space and taste more of what they make. The building was an old bakery, hence the brewery name. They are very unique in that all of their beers are brewed with 100% American, USDA-certified organic malts and hops.

Their main tasting room is quite large, with a long bar and lots of tables. BTR and I loved the bar top, it was made from reclaimed wood from an old schoolhouse. They have a rather expansive menu, and I would love to try some of the sandwiches next time we visit.

We were served some appetizers, including pretzels, which we all know are the way to my  heart. Then we were lucky enough to get a behind the scenes brewery tour with one of the brewers and owners, James.

It was really interesting to hear about how they use all organic ingredients in their beer. They are one of the first breweries in the area to do that and you can tell how passionate they are about it.

The brewery area is quite large, which is great if they choose to expand in the future. In addition to their main tasting room, they have a room that can be rented for special events. They are also working on adding an outdoor area.

They currently have 12 different beers on tap, and everything we tried we loved! The great thing about many of their beers is that they are sessionable, meaning under 5% ABV. My favorite was the Maevas Blend Coffee Brown and BTR’s was the Magnum Pale Ale. They also do growler fills, we were so bummed we forget to bring one to get filled that night!

Right now you can only try their beers in their tasting room, but it sounds like they will be distributing locally in the near future.

upcoming events

Thanks again to Old Bakery Beer Co. for having us and we can’t wait to come back!

Edit: I wanted to add that Old Bakery Beer Co. is super family friendly! Obviously we won’t be taking Jude late at night, but it would be a great place to go to for lunch or early dinner! They actually have a changing table in the bathroom (isn’t it funny that I totally notice these everywhere I go now that I’m a mom?) and high chairs in the tasting room.

  • We will have to check it out! I’m always down for a good brewery. Is it family friendly enough to take H for lunch?

    • Jen, I need to add that to my post! Definitely family friendly for lunch or early afternoon! They have a changing station in the bathroom (so funny that I always notice that now) and high chairs!
